Beyond Challenge & Skill: A Novel Systems Theory of Flow States
The coveted ‘Flow State’ — is a state many strive to achieve by taking on the perfect challenge. But what if there’s more to flow than just the task itself? What if flow originates not from the external world, but from within?
Flow states are widely discussed, from creatives entering a creative flow to coders ‘getting in the zone.’ Popular theories often focus on the activity, suggesting we pursue challenges just outside our comfort zone to achieve this blissful state. However, after experiencing a flow state spanning days, I’ve realized this advice may be misplaced. It focuses on the external, neglecting the internal — the true origin of flow.
Current Theories
Flow is often described as a byproduct of intense focus on a challenge perfectly balanced between boredom and anxiety. Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Channel theory posits that finding this ‘sweet spot’ of challenge is essential. The challenge shouldn’t bore you, but it shouldn’t cause intense anxiety either.
From a systems perspective, these theories suggest that an external challenge must be difficult enough to trigger an alignment of your internal systems (conscious thoughts, emotions, reactions, subconscious instincts, etc.).
This framework is well-established and undoubtedly holds merit, which is why I agree with the conclusions. However, after experiencing a continuous flow state without a specific challenge, I believe the emphasis on the challenge may be misplaced, and the path to flow may be more than just finding the ‘Goldilocks’ Zone’ (as seen in Figure.0)
What is Internal Alignment?
Internal alignment is a state where your internal systems harmonize towards a common goal or under common principles.
Imagine facing a high-stakes situation. A person with misaligned internal systems might experience self-doubt or fear, which will manifest in their actions. Conversely, an internally aligned person might feel the same fears but can redirect these feelings, consciously aligning them with their larger goals and motivations.
After years of relentless introspection, I recently experienced this phenomenon and subsequently entered a continuous, sustained flow state for multiple hours. This came as a revelation: this flow state arose without any particular challenge. This led me to hypothesize:
Flow is internal, not a byproduct of the external
Modern science often emphasizes the external challenge as a requirement for flow, but in my view, this is simply the most reliable avenue to reach it.
Unified Consciousness and Flow
My theory is that the external challenge is merely a trigger for flow, and true flow is actually the unification and alignment of all internal systems. External triggers are not (necessarily) the sole determinant of this state.
This is where my theory diverges from Csikszentmihalyi’s model. While his model emphasizes the between external challenge and skill, I propose that flow is fundamentally a phenomenon — an emergent property of aligned internal systems, a state I call “unified consciousness.” This state can be achieved independently of external conditions, though it is often triggered by them. One might argue that this is a purely semantic shift, but I believe it represents a fundamental change in how we understand and access flow. It moves us from a model of passive dependence on external challenge to one of active internal cultivation.
Let’s revisit the classic flow state scenario with this new lens, focusing on internal dynamics:
As shown in Figure 1, performing an action without alignment leads to scattered action. Here, multiple sub-systems run in the background, independent of the task at hand, which diverts internal energy away from just the task.
For simplicity, let’s say a person is painting. Their internal state intends to paint and actively translates their ideas onto the canvas. But if not in flow, their mind won’t dedicate all its resources to painting. Part of them might subconsciously doubt their ability (Adversarial System), requiring conscious effort to refocus. Another part might be thinking about their next meal (Idle System). These small, conflicting systems create friction, and the output, while present, won’t fully reflect a unified internal state.
Alternatively, a master painter in flow is entirely focused on the painting. As shown in Figure.2, their internal systems, that were previously occupied with other tasks, now unify towards the intent to paint. This alignment is so sharply focused that the individual’s sense of self merges with the activity — the painter and the process of painting become one. All adversarial systems, like doubt, dissolve in this unified state of consciousness.
Supporting Research
The concept of ‘losing yourself’ in an activity isn’t mere hyperbole; it’s backed by neuroscience. EEG studies on jazz musicians during flow states reveal that the brain optimizes its processing. Neural pathways associated with self-awareness, like the Default Mode Network (DMN), decrease in activity, while those associated with task execution, like the Central Executive Network (CEN), increase, suggesting an optimization of domain-specific activity. Although this research, along with theories like the Yerkes-Dodson Law, which highlights the importance of optimal arousal, provides valuable insights, they primarily focus on flow triggered by external activities.
Building on this, my theory posits that independently cultivated internal alignment is more fundamental to flow. Furthermore, research on neuroplasticity indicates that consistent, focused mental states can reshape neural pathways. This supports the idea that sustained internal alignment, as practiced through disciplines like those found in Stoicism or Taoism, could lead to long-term optimization of brain function, making flow states more readily accessible, regardless of the external challenge.
Summary & Practical Takeaways
In summary, my theory challenges existing flow state paradigms by shifting the emphasis from external challenges to internal alignment.
While a sufficiently difficult external challenge can force internal systems to align, thus triggering flow, it may not be necessary if internal alignment is achieved independently. This distinction is crucial: It suggests that flow isn’t solely dependent on external circumstances but can be cultivated from within.
How this can help you reach flow
Achieving complete internal alignment independent of external systems is arduous, but not impossible. It requires dedicated effort to break down misaligned internal systems — a path of true internal mastery, echoed in many timeless philosophical and spiritual writings. Surprisingly, these traditions align remarkably with my theory:
- The Bhagavad Gita teaches focusing on your Dharma (worldly duty), where listening to your internal systems, rather than external outcomes, naturally aligns your being over time.
- Stoicism emphasizes focusing on what’s within our control. By cultivating equanimity (detachment from reactions) and resilience, we reduce internal conflicts, facilitating flow.
- Taoism, through the concept of ‘Wu-Wei’ (effortless action), suggests that flow is achieved by aligning with the natural order, termed the Tao.
While these philosophies offer profound paths toward internal alignment, they require dedicated practice. However, even without embarking on a deep philosophical journey, you can still use these principles to enhance flow in your daily life. For now, here are some practical tips:
- Become aware of your internal misalignments. Notice when your thoughts, emotions, and actions are not in sync, and understand that this is often a natural response to our internal systems prioritizing their own needs over our conscious goals.
- Practice redirecting your focus. Gently acknowledge and shift your attention back to the task at hand when you notice internal conflicts or distractions.
- Focus on the process, not the outcome. Remind yourself that the external goal is a byproduct of aligned action.
- Embrace the “Goldilocks’ Zone” of challenge. Push yourself but be mindful of your internal state. The optimal challenge is one that facilitates internal alignment.
- Recognize that internal alignment is often context dependent. While striving for a perpetually aligned state is ideal, achieving it requires ongoing effort and is influenced by external factors. Be patient with yourself, and view each moment, each task, as an opportunity to cultivate alignment.
Conclusion
My theory calls for more research into the role of internal systemic alignment in flow states. This could revolutionize our understanding of high performance and how to achieve it.
This shift in perspective, from external triggers to internal alignment, is not merely theoretical. It has profound implications for how we approach productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. By advancing our understanding of internal alignment, I am confident this understanding could unlock transformative potential in human performance.
While this theory offers a new perspective on flow, further research is needed to explore the specific mechanisms by which internal alignment is achieved and maintained across different individuals and contexts.
